Detective Hanke briefly stepped out of the room to speak with Sergeant Newport. For a few moments inside the interrogation room, Chris was alone. At first, he stayed still as a statue, not moving, barely breathing. He reached for his coffee but didn’t take a sip. He picked up his cell phone from the table and immediately set it back down. Then he sank farther into his chair and remained nearly motionless for the next ten minutes.
Around 2:00 p.m., Hanke returned to the interrogation room and sat back down directly in front of Chris. He now had a new strategy: confront Chris with what the investigators had learned from Erin’s best friend. Asked about Erin’s friends in Tennessee, Chris said the only person she ever mentioned was Jessie.
“Do you know if she talked to Jessie about you?” Hanke asked.
“I don’t,” Chris replied.
“Here’s the deal, man,” Hanke said. “We know that you met with her on Saturday morning, the day that she went missing. We know that.”
Hanke then revealed to Chris that Jessie Trentham had told police that Erin intended to meet Chris on Saturday.
“We’ve talked to Jessie,” Hanke said. “We know you were going to meet her on Saturday. We know you were going to take her on a long drive and that there was going to be a surprise.”
But Chris had a ready response, once again claiming Erin was a liar. “She could have told Jessie anything.”
Hanke tried to get Chris to admit he was with Erin on Saturday, but Chris was defiant. His new mantra: “I never saw her on Saturday. I just saw her vehicle.”
After all the lies, Hanke was done humoring Chris.
“OK, we’re past that,” Hanke said. “Something bad happened after you met her. And I need to know exactly what happened.”
Before Chris could answer, Newport stepped into the interrogation room and took a seat in one of the plastic chairs.
With his gaze darting between the detective and sergeant, Chris again disparaged Erin, portraying her as an attention-hungry liar and manipulator.
“What did she lie to you about?” Newport asked.
“She told me that her husband was beating her and that she was afraid for her life,” Chris replied, almost robotically. “And the only reason she couldn’t go home was because he wouldn’t let her.”
Repeatedly, Chris called Erin a “pathological liar.”
“She openly lied to people in her life,” Chris said. “A pathological liar is a liar. They don’t care who they lie to.”
But Chris was the one who had been deceiving the sheriff’s department, Newport told him. He asked Chris why he had initially lied about seeing Erin’s car.
“I was afraid that since I saw her vehicle that you were going to automatically assume that I did something, that it’s my fault she’s missing,” Chris said.
“So you’ve been thinking about that?” Newport said. “It worries you, huh?”
“That she’s missing?” Chris asked.
“No,” the sergeant said. “That you think we think you had something to do with it.”
“It does.”
Newport then informed Chris they had obtained text messages Erin sent to Jessie in which she discussed meeting with Chris on the day she vanished.
